Check a Warranty by Serial Number

Most laptop makers have a free page where you type in the serial number and see when the warranty ends. This page links the official one for six makers, along with where to find the serial and how long the standard cover is.

Standard warranty. One year (Apple’s limited warranty), on top of any rights under consumer law. AppleCare extends it.

Several at once. No public bulk check. With Apple Business, the admin portal shows coverage for each device you manage.

How do I find the serial number on a Windows laptop?

On any Windows PC, open PowerShell and run the command below. It reads the serial the maker stored in the laptop's firmware. The older wmic bios get serialnumber has been removed from current versions of Windows 11.

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BIOS | Select-Object -Property SerialNumber

Why does the check page ask me to paste the serial?

None of these makers let a link fill in the serial number for you, and Apple and HP add a CAPTCHA, so you paste it in yourself, on their site rather than here.

Once you have the date, note it against that device in your list, or put it in our warranty expiry tracker so you can see what's ending soon. If something has already broken, our guide to filing a warranty claim covers the rest.

Rather not look them up one by one?

Forward the receipt to AssetJay and it files the purchase date with the asset, plus the serial if the receipt lists one. If the receipt doesn't give a warranty length it assumes one year, and it emails you 30, 7 and 1 day before the warranty ends. Each asset page links to its maker's check, with a button to copy the serial.
