How to print your asset tags
- Pick the sheet you have. Avery 5160 is the common US Letter address label. L7160 and L7651 are A4 sheets sold in the UK and Europe. Compatible own-brand sheets with the same code work too.
- Print a test page first. Tick “Print outlines”, print on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet up to the light. If the boxes line up, untick it and load the labels.
- Print at actual size. In the print dialog set scale to 100% (not “Fit to page”), margins to none and turn off headers and footers.
- Note where you stopped. Next time, start from the next number so no two items share a tag.
What's on each tag
Each tag carries its ID, like AJ-0001, as large text, and optionally your company name. In QR style the code holds the same ID as plain text, so any phone camera or barcode scanner reads back exactly what's printed. It doesn't link to a web page, and the tag carries no personal data: who has the item belongs in your records, not on a sticker.
Paper labels are fine for monitors, docks and kit that stays on a desk. For laptops that travel, a laminated or polyester label lasts longer, or put a strip of clear tape over a paper one. Our guide to asset tags covers placement, materials and numbering schemes, and the equipment tracker template has a Tag column ready for the numbers you print.
Want each tag to open the asset's record?
AssetJay prints QR labels for the assets you track. Scanning one opens that asset's page, with who has it, the warranty and the receipt, and your own asset tag prints under the code. Print one label or a whole Avery 5160 sheet.
